Reflecting the collective and spontaneous initiative of French teachers keen to allow their pupils to express themselves in the wake of the attacks of 11 September 2001, more than two thousand drawings were sent to the Embassy of the United States of America in France, where they have been preserved for over twenty years.

These drawings reflect the national and international outpouring of emotion, as well as the diversity of gestures of solidarity in the aftermath of the attacks.

Details of the drawing shown in the photograph: it depicts a white bird against a blue background; the bird is adorned with a rainbow, a sun and clouds.
