Following his decision of 6 January, 2025, to complete the Museum & Memorial project effectively, and in order to put an end to the uncertainties that have not allowed since to advance the project, President Emmanuel Macron decided to change its location. He took note of the pitfalls raised by the choice made in 2021 to create the future MMT at the site of the former Ecole de plein air de Suresnes. Although this site was of an exceptional nature, the ministries responsible for funding the work considered that the cost of restoring this off-standard historic monument was far too high in the current budgetary context. The MMT's Prefiguration Mission was therefore asked to study several other rights of way under the Ministry of the Armed Forces and in liaison with it, some in Paris intra-muros, others in the Greater Paris. Subject to an in-depth examination to begin these days, these sites have a priori features that allow the already engaged work of museums and memorials to continue with the same ambition and at significantly lower costs. The President of the Republic has requested that the final choice be made by the end of September.
While the prefiguration mission deeply regrets the abandonment of the Suresnes site, it takes note of this decision, which helps to remove the uncertainties. This decision, it is hoped, will enable the MMT to enter into a phase of concrete realization, building on its achievements: the collections under way, the final Museum program being completed, the much advanced reflection on the Memorial in close collaboration with the associations of victims and the rise of a scientific reference point on terrorism and its human and social consequences.
